Jab We Met: 'I was ignorant about love, until I saw her'

Last updated on: February 4, 2013 18:19 IST

Srinivas Bhailikar from Dubai shares his story and tells us why the month of February is so special to him.

The Jab We Met stories on Rediff have surely inspired me to share my experience of love with my sweet heart Veena.

I was seriously a flirt and used to take girls on a ride and play pranks on them.

I was never interested in having a love affair but was a hot favourite among all the girls. During graduation days girls in my college never knew my original name but always used to tease me with the name Abhi from Fauji (Shahrukh's first serial on TV).

Three years of my college just went in flirting, singing songs and dramatising movie sequences for my friends and very little serious academics.

I always thought that having a girlfriend was a waste of time and money.

Money played an important role in my life, as I was partly taking care of my petty expenses.

I worked in a hotel during nights and attended college during the day.

I passed out with good percentage in graduation and sought admission into a post-graduation course for hotel management.

During my Hotel Management days I along with a group of friends hired a small room near to our college in order to save time and focus more on studies and practicals.

We used to study at nights and by now, I was well mature and knew my future should be in the hospitality industry.

Our room owner had three good-looking daughters whom I saw a couple of times.

Veena was his second daughter. I was ignorant about love and women, until I saw Veena on a few occasions.

Suddenly my perspective towards love started changing. I became inquisitive and wanted to get introduced to Veena.

I realised that Veena was equally interested in knowing me. She was fair, cute and a wide-eyed girl who would watch and hear me from her house next door.

I still remember the day she went for a family gathering wearing a nice saree and long earrings like Raveena Tandon.

Oh my god! I had flirted so much with girls in past but I had never seen such a simple and beautiful girl.

I knew that almighty had already reserved Veena for me and I seriously wanted to approach her.

One fine day I mustered the courage. When she was returning from work I stopped and spoke to her.

The meeting was very brief but productive. We planned to meet at the temple the next day.

Finally, came February 16, the first date of a flirt.

The feeling was incredible, I felt nervous, but good.

I felt that time should stop. We chatted four hours and got to know each other.

When we proposed our love, both of us were shy but knew that we were made for each other.

'Life has not changed much for us'

We enjoyed a movie on the same day.

We walked about 6 kms and before we could realise, we had reached home.

She introduced me to her family and they were more than happy to accept me.

My father-in-law was a great gentleman.

He had modern thoughts and was happy with our relationship.

My parents were initially disturbed with the news but everything disappeared when they saw my darling Veena -- her nature, simplicity and the way she had been brought up.

My friends were pissed off as I had pataoed the owner's daughter and worried what would happen to them if I ditched the girl.

They warned me that if I wanted to ditch this girl I better notify them in advance so that they could vacate the room and run away.

Our love story continued for four years.

My friends and I were on the high of our professional careers. As time passed, we suffered a lot of ups and downs.

There were family issues, misunderstandings, financial problems, professional issues followed by the death of Veena's father.

During these days we were determined and supported each other. We knew that we cannot live without each other.

I ensured that Veena's family was comfortable and well supported financially and morally.

Veena and I sorted out each and every issue together and made sure that it did not reflect on our relationship.

After all, we were friends made for each other who met in the Valentine month.

W got married on Feb 6, 1996 with Almighty's blessings.

Life was still a rough road in case of work and life balance.

I got an opportunity to work abroad and had to take up the challenge as I wanted to keep my family happy.

Veena again played an important role in my life. We stayed apart for 8 years.

I used to visit India once a year for two months.

I could not see my son growing but Veena had always been there for me to help me achieve my professional goals.

She was practical to a great extent.

Today, we are a happy family living abroad with two kids. Whatever I am today I owe it to Veena.

She has been my support at all times and even after 16 years of being together, we are as young as we were.

Life has not changed much for us.

I respect Veena for her commitment to being a partner full of trust and love.

I always ensure that I don't hurt her feelings in any way. I have earned health, wealth, respect and prosperity but Veena's love for me holds the first place in my life.

My love, my marriage, was in the Valentine month and I treat this day as a festival each year and enjoy my life to full with my sweetheart Veena and my kids.
