Pandya brothers star in Baroda's emphatic win
New Delhi: Brothers Krunal and Hardik Pandya excelled with the bat and ball respectively as Baroda crushed Punjab by 75 runs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy Group A match.
Batting first, Krunal scored 78 off 105 with nine boundaries adding 102 runs with Aditya Waghmode (54) as Baroda scored a respectable 249 in 48.3 overs.
Irfan Pathan smashed 37 off 40 balls and Vishnu Solanki hit 24 off 17 balls as the duo added 52 runs for the sixth wicket.
Baltej Singh (four for 47) was the most successful bowler for Punjab while Siddharth Kaul got three wickets.
Baroda followed it up with a good showing with the ball as they bowled out Punjab for 174 in 40.4 overs with Hardik working up good pace to finish with figures of three for 26.
Hardik cleaned up Gurkeerat Singh Mann (62), Sandeep Sharma (10) and Siddharth Kaul (0).
MP outclass Mumbai
Chennai: Chandrakant Sakure shone with the ball as he claimed five for 25 to help Madhya Pradesh register a 80-run win over Ranji Trophy finalists Mumbai in a Group C match.
Mumbai restricted Madhya Pradesh to 214 in 45.1 overs but their batsmen disappointed as they crashed for a paltry 134 in 38.4 overs.
Put in to bat, Madhya Pradesh opener Ankit Dane (46) and Sohraab Dhaliwal (51) chipped in with important contributions to take the team past 200-run mark.
For Mumbai, Shardul Thakur (three for 27) was the pick of the bowlers with three scalps.
In reply, Mumbai kept losing wickets at regular interval with Sakure and Saransh Jain (three for 30) doing the damage, sharing eight wickets between them.
Dhoni-led Jharkhand cruise to victory
Kalyani: Fans who turned up to watch a Mahendra Singh Dhoni special returned disappointed even as Jharkhand cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Services for their second victory in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Chasing a stiff 277, Jharkhand did not require services of their Captain Cool as Saurabh Tiwary (102 not out off 103 balls) and Ishank Jaggi (116 not out off 92 balls) put together an unbroken 214-run partnership to script a fluent chase with 22 balls to spare.
He may not have played a role with the bat but Dhoni's tips during the drinks break played a big role in their win, Jaggi later revealed.
"Mahi bhai advised us to play in a calm and composed manner. He told us, 'If you play with patience runs will come. It's about staying there and finish the game'," Jaggi said.
Jharkhand had a shaky build-up and were reduced to 65 for three inside 17 overs but poor fielding from Services let the duo build on a firm stand. Yet to open his account, Tiwary was dropped at mid-off by Shakti Malviya off Poonam Poonia, while Jaggi got a reprieve on 25.
At 107 for three midway into their innings, the match tilted heavily in favour of Services with required run rate going past six.
It was an ideal situation for the 'finisher' Dhoni as the crowd kept on shouting his name in anticipation but Tiwary and Jaggi did not take a step wrong as they built the innings in the middle overs.
They kept rotating strikes and got an odd boundary or six in every over providing a calm assurance in the dressing room as the crowd started to become frustrated and shouted 'Saurabh Tiwary Hai Hai'.
However, Tiwary took it in a positive spirit and said: "We must understand that they're emotional as Mahi bhai never played here...Being a professional I did not mind. We were subjected to much more sledging on the field."
Having slowly built their innings, the duo took charge of the show and Jaggi completed his sixth List A century in 82 balls with a boundary in the 42nd over, while Tiwary followed suit reaching his second List A hundred in 100 balls.
Earlier, Services could not capitalise on a solid 104-run opening partnership between Gaurav Kochar (50) and Nakul Verma (48) to be restricted for 276 for nine.
Fresh from his 124 against Saurashtra two days ago, Verma missed a half-century narrowly when Vikash Singh gave the first breakthrough of the day in the 20th over.
Dhoni produced a spectacular runout to dismiss Abhijit Salvi (31) before he took a catch to dismiss Services skipper Soumya Swain for 12 and reduce them to 158 for four in the 32nd over.
Jadhav's ton helps Maharashtra knock out Delhi
Cuttack: Captain Kedar Jadhav led from the front with a blistering 113 as Maharashtra pounded a hapless Delhi by 195 runs in a Group B match to knock them out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
After being invited to bat, Maharashtra treated the Delhi bowlers with disdain to put on board formidable 367 for eight and then shot out the rivals for a mere 172 inside 34 overs.
It was third defeat in a row from Delhi, being led by young Rishabh Pant as they were knocked out of the tournament.
It was not a great start for Maharashtra as seasoned Ashish Nehra removed Ruturaj Gaikwad (9) but Vijay Zol (35) and Naushad Shaikh (52) firmed up the innings with a 52-run stand.
After Shaikh was undone by Nitish Rana, captain Jadhav took the Delhi attack by the scruff of its neck, making an 83-ball 113 that was laced with 11 fours and eight sixes.
With keeper Nikhil Naik (63), Jadhav raised a quickfire 59-run stand for the fourth wicket before being dismissed by Pawan Negi.
Delhi had a relatively better start with India discards Gautam Gambhir (53) and Shikhar Dhawan (24) putting on 64 inside 10 overs but once the latter was run out, the innings continued to slump.
Only Milind Kumar (38) and Manan Sharma (21) resisted the Maharashtra attack a bit bit others faded as Delhi middle order crumbled with Dhruv Shorey (1), captain Pant (6) and Rana (0) all falling cheaply.
In the other Group B matches, Tamil Nadu got the better of Himachal Pradesh by eight wickets, chasing a modest 217 to win in Cuttack while Tripura edged Uttar Pradesh by two wickets, chasing 198 in Bubaneshwar.
Opener Kaushik Gandhi hit an unbeaten 107 in Tamil Nadu's emphatic win after Himachal Pradesh were all out for 216.
It was Sarfaraz Khan who helped UP post 197 and the bowlers too fought well but Gurinder Singh led Tripura to the finish line with his gritty 64 in a tight climax.
