Spring Onion Besan Pithla (Kandayachya Paticha)

Spring Onion Besan Pithla (Kandayachya Paticha) is a simple curry dish. Pithla is very easy to make. This famous Maharashtrian dish is made with spring onions and besan (gram flour). Spring onion and besan pithla is a versatile dish that can be equally relished with rice and roti.

This delicious recipe is given by my Bhabhi Anupama , who makes some delicious Maharashtrian dishes. All though I follow her recipe and the result is very good but I still love this dish prepared by her. Spring onion and besan ki sabzi is a good change from the dals and curries so go ahead and give this dish a try.

Very easy to make, pithla is one versatile recipe which can be twisted to suit one’s appetite. I am sure you will enjoy this recipe as much as I do.

Ingredients for Spring Onion Besan Pithla

2 cups spring onions chopped
1 onion chopped
1 tomato chopped
1 tablespoon ginger chopped fine
1 tablespoon garlic chopped fine
1 green chilli chopped fine
1 tablespoon coriander leaves chopped
1 teaspoon lemon juice
4 tablespoon besan (gram flour)
½ teaspoon haldi (turmeric)
½ teaspoon chilli powder
½ teaspoon garam masala (optional)
1 teaspoon jeera (cumin)
1 teaspoon sarso (mustard)
A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
Salt to taste
2 tablespoon oil
2 to 3 cups water

Directions for Spring Onion Besan Pithla

  • Heat oil in a sauce pan; add mustard, jeera and let it splutter.
  • Add hing, ginger, garlic, chilli, onion and saute till translucent.
  • Add tomatoes and saute till soft.
  • Now add the spring onions and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add haldi, chilli powder, salt and saute for a minute.
  • Mix besan and water together, add to the vegetables and stir so that there are no lumps.
  • When it starts to boil lower the heat and cook covered for 10 minutes.
  • Add water if required.
  • Switch off the heat, add garam masala, lemon juice and stir.
  • Garnish with coriander.
  • Serve with rice or roti.
