Miyazaki: This mango variety being grown in MP could cost you Rs 2.7 lakh per kilogram

A couple in Madhya Pradesh has deployed nearly a dozen guards and dogs to protect their orchard, which has a total of two mango trees. The two trees are unique Japanese Miyazaki, a variety of mango that is sold at around Rs 2.70 lakh per kilogram in the international market.

The Miyazaki mangoes are dubbed as one of the most costly fruits in the world and are found in just a handful of countries, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines. The saplings require warm weather and long hours of sunshine before they grow into a full-sized tree that is also known as Taiyo-no-Tamago in Miyazaki, Japan.

The "Eggs of Sun" mangoes

While the mango has a flaming red colour, its unusual appearance like an egg gives it the name of "Eggs of Sun." The unusual colour is different from the yellow colour seen in pelican mangoes that are widely grown in Southeast Asia. The Miyazaki mangoes are graded uniquely and must weigh around 350 grams in an average size and have nearly 15 per cent more sugar content than other mango varieties. The mangoes can be as much as 900 grams in weight.

Before being exported to countries across the world, the mangoes are subjected to quality assessment and only the selected few are branded as the"Eggs of Sun" denoting the highest quality.

The cultivation of this variety of mangoes requires plenty of rain and was first cultivated around the Japanese city of Miyazaki in 1984. Warm weather, long hours of sunlight and abundant rain made the region ideal for cultivating the costly fruit. The variety is cultivated around April to August and is sold off between May and June.

According to reports, the mangoes, rich in antioxidants, contain beta-carotene and folic acid and help in improving vision. The price of the mangoes generally begin at Rs 8,600 and can go up to Rs 2-3 lakh per kilogram.
