Samvat Ke Chawal (Vrat Ke Chawal)

Samvat Ke Chawal (Vrat Ke Chawal) also known as Barnyard Millet is delicious and healthy dish usually made during fasting time when you have to eat a falahari meal. The barnyard millet is a wholesome grain over and above common cereal grains like rice, wheat, semolina (rawa) and by no means should be restricted to just the fasting days.

Also known as Sama Ke Chawal, Samak, Samo , Swang, mordhan Moraiyo, is very nutritive. It is a good replacement for rice and even broken wheat commonly known as daliya. In India, cereal grains are not consumed during fasts which make, barnyard millets a popular ingredient during the fasting days.

Ingredients for Samvat Ke Chawal

Samvat Ke Chawal, Vrat Ke Chawal, Barnyard Millet

1 cup sama ke chawal (barnyard millet)
3 tablespoon peanuts crushed
½ cup aloo (potato) chopped
2 green chillis chopped
1 teaspoon adrak (ginger) chopped
1 tablespoon coriander chopped fine
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon chilli powder
¼ teaspoon pepper (optional)
Sendha namak (rock salt) to taste
2 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
2 cups water

Directions for Samvat Ke Chawal

  • Wash and soak the millet in water for 1 hour. Drain the water and set aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan; add the green chillis, ginger and peanuts and saute for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add the potatoes and saute for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Now add the millet, salt, chilli, coriander powder and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Pour in the water and stir well. Cover and let it cook. Once it starts to boil reduce the heat and cook just like you cook rice.
  • When the water gets absorbed and millets are cooked switch off the heat.
  • Now add the lemon juice, coriander and mix gently.
  • Sprinkle pepper and serve with yogurt.
